Food Scrap Recycling in PV!
A pilot program for food scrap recycling is launching this Friday at the Farmers Market at Tompkins Corners Cultural Center. Between the hours of 3pm and 6:30pm, Justin Baker of Cucumber Hill Farm will collect food scraps and take them to his farm to support the eating habits of his chickens. This pilot program will continue every Friday afternoon through August 31st.
Baker will take fruit and vegetable scraps (cooked or raw, stickers removed), cooked meat leftovers, dairy, eggs and their shells (crushed), breads and grains. Off limits: avocados and yard waste. Though not required, he prefers scraps that have been refrigerated or frozen as he doesn't want to feed his animals extremely rotten food.
Depending on what is gleaned from this pilot program, some residents are hoping the town will apply for a grant to institute a broader, year-round program. Their goal is to reduce the amount of waste going into landfills and incinerators and to offer an option to residents who don't want to compost at their homes.
